Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Sun Score mean?

The Sun Score is a 0-100 rating of how much usable natural light a spot receives across the year. Higher scores mean more direct sunlight. A score of 70+ is excellent for most plants and sun-loving spaces. Below 30 is low light, suitable for shade-tolerant plants.

How accurate is the score?

Auriel uses the NREL Solar Position Algorithm (accurate to 0.01 degrees) combined with regional climate data covering 50+ zones worldwide. The score accounts for your window's direction, tilt, local cloud cover patterns, and seasonal sun position changes across all 12 months.

How do I measure a window?

Switch to Window mode, point your camera at the window glass, and tap to lock. Auriel computes a full 12-month sun exposure analysis in seconds. You can then simulate different window coverings to see their effect on light.

How do I measure my garden?

Switch to Garden mode, stand at the spot you want to measure, and tap "Measure This Spot." Slowly pan the camera around you, including any trees, fences, or buildings nearby, then tilt up toward the sky. Auriel scans for shade sources and adjusts your score accordingly.

Does Auriel need an internet connection?

No. All calculations run entirely on your iPhone. Auriel works fully offline, indoors or outdoors, anywhere in the world.

Does Auriel collect my data?

No. Auriel collects zero data. No analytics, no tracking, no accounts. Your location, camera, and motion data are processed on-device and never leave your phone. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Why does Auriel need camera access?

The camera powers two features: the AR sun path overlay (showing where the sun is and will be across your view) and the garden shade measurement (scanning for obstructions). No images are saved or transmitted.

The app is asking for location but I denied it. How do I fix this?

Go to Settings > Auriel > Location and select "While Using the App." Auriel needs your coordinates to calculate the sun's position accurately for your exact location.

Can I compare different spots?

Yes. After scoring a window or garden spot, tap "Save" to store it. The Saved Locations tab lets you compare scores side by side, revisit seasonal details, and set golden hour or peak sun notifications.

What devices are supported?

Auriel requires an iPhone running iOS 17 or later.
